- │ This is a VENDINFO Product Information Record │
- │ │
- │ This record is a means of conveying information about a software │
- │ product from the author to distributors and users. It contains a │
- │ normal, "human-readable" section (you're reading it now), followed │
- │ by a compressed data record. The data record contains a great │
- │ deal of information in a form useable by automated tools. This │
- │ allows BBSes, disk vendors, etc. to test automatically for │
- │ permission to distribute, and to automatically extract product │
- │ information for use in BBS files databases, vendor catalogs, etc. │
- │ │
- │ The VENDINFO file standard is published and is freely useable. │
- │ │
- │ The VENDINFO toolset includes a free end-user viewer, processing │
- │ tools for use by distributors (BBSes, shareware disk vendors, │
- │ etc.), and the editor used by author/publishers to produce these │
- │ records. These tools are either free or very-low cost shareware. │
- │ The toolset can be obtained from many sources, including the │
- │ originators of VENDINFO: │

- ===== Installation =====================================
-
- The installation procedure for CrossWords is quite simple. The package
- includes a program which automates the entire process. You will need
- about 360K of available disk space on the hard drive on which you plan
- to install CrossWords.
-
- The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
- CrossWords.
-
-
- INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
-
- To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
-
- o Place CrossWords distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
- appropriate diskette drive.
-
- o Run Microsoft Windows 3.1. If you do not have Microsoft Windows
- 3.1 installed on your machine, follow the instructions in the
- Microsoft Windows manual before proceeding.
-
- o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
- For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, select
- File Run from the Program Manager and type "a:install".
-
- o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
- You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
- are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
- program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
- the CrossWords files to that directory. It will make no other
- changes; specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or
- config.sys files.
-
-
- INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
-
- If you downloaded CrossWords from a BBS (or received it in the form of
- archive files from some other source), you will not need to do
- anything further. The fact that you are reading this message will
- indicate that CrossWords has been installed on your machine.
-
-
- YOU'RE READY TO GO
-
- Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
- (filename extension "doc") which have been installed. In particular,
- read at least README.DOC. That document will tell you how to invoke the
- program, and will give you other information you need to properly
- evaluate CrossWords. I hope you enjoy the program.
-

-
- ===== License for Use and Distribution =================
-
- WHAT IS SHAREWARE
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
- buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are
- expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
- request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
- trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
- to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
- manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
- copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
- stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
- commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both
- cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in
- the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
- copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
- before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
- find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
- commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
- easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
- low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
- guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
-
- DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
-
- Users of CrossWords must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "CrossWords
- is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or
- implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
- merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
- liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from
- the use of CrossWords."
-
- CrossWords is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
- to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends,
- but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
- The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
- users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
- incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you
- enjoy this program and wish to receive more puzzles, you must make a
- registration payment to the author. The registration fee will license
- one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat
- this software just like a book. An example is that this software may be
- used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
- location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used
- at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot
- be read by two different persons at the same time.
-
- Anyone distributing CrossWords for any kind of remuneration must
- first contact Glen DeBiasa for authorization.
- This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
- recognized by the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) as
- adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
- distributors may begin offering CrossWords immediately (however, Glen
- DeBiasa must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
- up-to-date with the latest version of CrossWords.).
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of CrossWords along to your
- friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if
- they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a
- copy of the latest version of CrossWords plus at least 30 new puzzles.
-
- The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby incorporated by reference.
- Any distribution satisfying all the distribution requirements expressed
- in that data record is hereby authorized.
-
- HOW TO REGISTER CROSSWORDS
